Why a dead cat is a good idea

This is a fragment of one of the interviews I did for my documentary on Industrial Design. The audio is recorded with a “shotgun” (or “directional”) microphone without a microphone cover. (I do own one, but couldn’t find it at the time.)

The slight breeze must’ve caused the sound of a thunderstorm within the mike. The camera automagically adjusts the volume to keep it within an acceptable range, which causes a strange effect: the audio has about the same intensity throughout the clip, but the voice seems to disappear completely at points where the wind is very loud. Needless to day, I need to re-shoot this interview.

The obvious solution to the wind-problem is a fluffy microphone cover or “dead cat”. The ones most commonly seen on large boom poles at TV interviews. I need to find out where to get an affordable one as soon as possible. Since there is no wind for a moment near the end of the clip, you can hear that the quality of the audio the microphone records is actually quite good.
